MUMBAI: One of the 20 children, who were caught in the school bus on the Sion- Panvel highway that burst into flames of Thursday, died of his injuries on Saturday evening.
Fourteen-year-old Ronit Gore was undergoing treatment at National Burns Centre in Airoli where he was admitted with 68% burn injuries. The other children at the hospital are stable.
"Ronit passed away at 7.30 pm due to pulmonary, cardio respiratory and acute renal failure,'' said Dr Pushpa Jadhav.
Ronit was put on a ventilator for two days after doctors performed a tracheostomy on Thursday evening. The procedure involves making an opening in the patient's trachea as the person has difficulty in breathing the usual way.
"Initially, he was not responding to the treatment, but on Saturday morning, he began to improve a little bit. We were able to record his blood pressure manually, which is a favourable sign. But suddenly in the afternoon, his condition started deteriorating. Ronit's case was complex as he had suffered multiple organ failure due to the burns he sustained,'' said Dr Jadhav.
On his way to the hospital at Airoli, director of the CKT School Prashant Thakur said, "I was informed by the doctors that Ronit has passed away. Yesterday, doctors told us that he was not responding to treatment, but today they said he was showing signs of improvement. So the news of his death came as quite a shock.''
Incidentally, Ronit was one of the last children to be rescued from the bus. The constables who rushed in to save the children found Ronit lying unconscious at the back of the bus, where the fire had brike out.
The police had said the fire might have been caused when some inflammable substance stored at the back of the bus was ignited by an electrical spark.
